Biography

The Congregation of the Sisters, Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Scranton, Pennsylvania, operates this program. The IHM Sisters work together to meet the educational, healthcare, social and spiritual needs of those whom we serve. Efforts to promotejustice for local immigrants highlightthe need for an ESL program in South Scranton to serve the fast growing Latino population and other immigrant groups living in that area.  Experience in the program provided a depth of understanding regarding the challenges faced by learners, cultural differences, and the components of effective language and literacy programs. Feedback from the adult learners indicated consistent progress in the language as well as a sense of belonging and community fostered by the program. Sixty-seven adult learners are currently enrolled in the program, which runs 38 classes or sessions per week.

The IHM Congregation is a 501(c)(3), religious organization incorporated in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
