Potomac Community Resources

Potomac Community Resources, Inc. (PCR) is an award-winning nonprofit organization that promotes the full inclusion of persons with developmental differences and intellectual disabilities into all aspects of community life. PCR fulfills our mission by providing 35 innovative, therapeutic, social, recreational and respite care programs for teens and adults with developmental differences. PCR also engages in public policy advocacy, helps create new similar organizations, and undertakes special projects.

Founded in 1994 by a small group of parents at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Potomac, Maryland whose sons and daughters with developmental differences needed options for social interaction, physical fitness, skill-building programs, and respite care, PCR now serves over 500 teens, adults and their families.

PCR receives support from various sources including Catholic Charities, the Raskob Foundation, and the Order of Malta.

The Tricia Sullivan Respite Care Program (TSRC) is PCR’s flagship program, specifically created for teens and adults with profound to moderate developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities and complex medical needs. Three Sunday afternoons a month, for five hours each, TSRC provides award-winning therapeutic respite and medical care in a community-based setting. TSRC is designed to provide participants with opportunities to experience new learning, benefit from therapeutic activities, and have fun, while simultaneously providing parents and caregivers with a break from their daily routine of caring around the clock for an individual with multiple disabilities at home. The TSRC therapeutic activities include music therapy, art therapy, wheelchair dancing, exercise, sensory stimulation, massage therapy, and a relaxation class. To best meet the needs of the participants, and ensure their health and safety, the program operates with a staff to participant ratio of nearly 1:1. TSRC provides a unique and critically needed service to individuals who are among the poorest and most marginalized people in society.
