NativityMiguel of Scranton

In 1971 the Jesuits on the Lower East Side of Manhattan founded the first Nativity School. Its apostolate was to provide disadvantaged kids a tuition free learning environment where they could excel academically, socially and spiritually. Today there are over 60 schools in 27 states based on the Nativity model. In these oases of advancement more than 4,000 young people now grow and develop in wisdom and grace.

One such school is the Nativity Miguel School in Scranton, Pennsylvania. As the result of the commitment and collaboration of six religious congregations in the Scranton area  the first graduating class of the Nativity Miguel School received their diplomas in the Spring of 2019.

As stated in its website (www.nativitymiguelscranton.org) the school’s goal is “to provide a holistic, financially accessible and integrated education to students of all faiths who are in grades five through eight and whose potential is underserved because of academic, social and financial challenges. Through the shared commitment of community and educational leaders, the school offers an academically rigorous, extended-day, year-round program which empowers students to greater achievement in high school, college and future employment”.
