Benedictine Sisters of Erie
Biography
The Benedictine Sisters of Erie, founded in 1856, was the first Roman Catholic community of women religious established in the Erie area. Today, 77 sisters, ages 29-104, at Mount Saint Benedict Monastery share a life of work and prayer to create a more just and inclusive culture. Through our outreach ministries we are a presence in the Erie Community, including inner-city Erie, where we respond to the needs of children, women, the poor and the unemployed. Throughout our 165-year history, we have educated women and children throughout northwest PA, fed the poor and hungry, empowered low-income individuals to self-sufficiency, prayed for a world in need of healing and grace, and welcomed and journeyed with the stranger. The Benedictine way is to seek God in the communal life and to respond with prayer and ministry.
